New Updated Policy of YouTube for creators in 2021
YouTube is always modifying and evolving, what be will change for creators in 2021, which new features, which new trends, which new rules should we expect? We will talk about all of this and much more in this Blog.
A lot has changed on YouTube in 2020. More features, new rules, more channels. And I want to talk about the biggest changes happening on YouTube and how they will affect you.
First of all,
Monetization.
YouTube has changed some of their terms of service so they can monetize videos outside of the YouTube partner program. It is rolling out all around the world in 2021.
What does this mean? YouTube will be going to place ads in front of videos of people who cannot monetize their videos, but the revenue of these videos will go entirely to YouTube. It will not be shared with the creators. So that's quite bad for channels who are outside of YouTube partner program. But people in the YouTube partner program are also expecting CPMs(Cost per Mille) to drop.
YouTube said it's very unlikely, but unlikely is not impossible. So, we will see how this will affect the platform.
Let's look at new features on YouTube.
Chapters were introduced in 2019, but they are getting more powerful. First of all, if you rank on Google with your video, these chapters might be shown under your Google rankings. And YouTube is also doing some experiments, automatically putting chapters in your video so the creator doesn't need to putt hem in there manually. And they are experimenting with a new timestamp tool that can help creators to put in chapters more easily
YouTube Shorts
An entirely new feature that has been added in 2020 are the so-called YouTube Shorts. It's similar to Tik-Tok, so that these are very short videos that are in a horizontal format.
You can probably watch YouTube Shorts on your homepage already, but there is a camera tool with which you can create these short videos more easily, which was first only launched in India. But YouTube has told that it will roll it, out to the rest of the world soon.
A major trend that's can bee seen on YouTube is that subscribers are getting less important. In the early time of YouTube when you subscribe to a channel, you saw every video of this channel. Nowadays, people watch less than their subscription feed.
But more on the YouTube homepage where YouTube filters the videos and where YouTube tries to show you videos that you are most likely to watch no matter if you are subscribed to the channel or not. And YouTube is thinking even more about sorting the subscription feed.
I'm not a huge supporter of this idea, but with these modifications , we can expect that the subscription feed to be filtered algorithmically as well.
What does this mean for creators?
Well, there needs to have a bigger focus on click-through rate and watch time. If you have a big following on YouTube, you cannot be certain that each and every video will be seen by everyone of your subscribers.
So big channels can have small and little views on their videos, and small creators can get a lot of use if they create great videos. To balance this, algorithmically filtering everything where the viewer has left with no choice which content they see.
YouTube wants to give users more option to filter their content. First of all, they are the new sorting options on the YouTube home feed. You can see different topics that you watch regularly and you can see different types of videos. So, example, you could see gaming or you could see photography or piano if you watch piano videos.
But you can also see types of videos like life videos or videos that are good for listening or videos that were recently uploaded. Currently, this feature is only present in the English version of YouTube. So if you want to see it, if you don't see it, just switch your YouTube to English and you will see it.
Hopefully, this feature will also roll out to the rest of the world in 2021. Another feature that tries to give the viewer more choices and to make the algorithm stronger and better are polls that YouTube is using more regularly.
YouTube Polls
After you watch the video, you might see something along the lines of "did you enjoy this video?" What did you like about this video? How do you feel about this video? And so on. So YouTube is working with polls to not only get quantitative data, but also qualitative data. What does this mean for creators?
Reporting Bad Ads
Well, the same thing is always make goodvideos that people enjoy watching. And another feature that YouTube launched to give the viewer more control is that, they can report bad ads that they think shouldn't be on YouTube, on mobile. Speaking about mobile,
YouTube is now more focused on developing mobile tools for creators. More viewers are watching YouTube videos on mobile than they are watching on the computer or laptop. But more and more, YouTube is also creating channels just with their smartphone and not on the computer.
Unfortunately, the YouTube studio app is still missing a lot of features where you can do certain things on the computer, but not on mobile. Some features were added in October 2020, like changing your metadata finally or filtering your comments, real-time analytics, a dark mode.
But we can surely expect some more features in 2021, because YouTube is focusing on this at the moment. But we probably can expect some more features to come out on the desktop version of the YouTube studio.
We saw the introduction of newanalytics data in 2020. Data like when your viewers are on YouTube, other videos your audience watched, or key moments for audience retention. Most features that we had in the old creative studio are now in the YouTube studio.
So, YouTube can focus more on developing new features and can put more time and effort into this. And I'm very excited to see what features they will add next year. If you don't want to miss out on anything, subscribe to this Blog, so we can keep you updated about all the new features.
